I was also tired of backyard breeders seeing that polished presentation and thinking cat plus cat equals big profits.
Being transparent means you get all of it. Sorry if you signed up for fluffy kittens.
The polished image is not the cattery
A beautiful presentation can be completely accurate and still materially incomplete.
A record made entirely of perfect kittens quietly teaches the wrong lesson. It makes breeding look automatic, illness look exceptional, loss look suspicious, and every litter look profitable. None of those things is true.
This is a place to share my Oriental Shorthairs and my experience with cat breeding and showing: the good, the fun, and the heartbreak.
Documents are evidence, not holy relics
A breeder should be able to provide registration, references, show records, and title certificates if titled parents are claimed. A breeder should be able to show current photographs and video of the cats and kittens.
Pedigrees aren’t too impressive unless you’re knowledgeable about what you’re reading. Scammers can show pedigrees as “proof” of legitimacy. Scammers can copy paper too.
A title proves that the cat was exhibited and qualified under the applicable rules. A genetic panel answers the questions represented on the panel. A contract states obligations. None of those things independently proves wisdom, honesty, health, or good judgment.
The existence of evidence does not relieve you of evaluating it.
Transparency is not voyeurism
There is being transparent with the public and then there are simply things the public does not need to see. Breeders need places where they can exchange necropsies, surgical reports, birth defects, and the ugly details without turning somebody’s grief into spectacle.
The public needs the material conclusion: what happened, what remains uncertain, what changed, and what a family ought to know. It does not need a treatment recipe extracted from a dated emergency or another family’s private veterinary record.
Transparency has boundaries. Theater has scenery.
I do not sell enthusiasm by the pound
I don’t know how other people get wealthy from recommendations, but my guess is they endorse products I refuse to endorse without trying and liking them.
When I was given a sample cat lawn to review, I said I would be transparent if it wasn’t something I’d give the cats. The cats ignored it, then sat on it, never ate it, and never mistook it for litter. I didn’t hate it. That is approximately the level of manufactured ecstasy available here.
The standard is a record you can test
Ask questions. A legitimate breeder should tolerate intelligent curiosity and explain the evidence behind a claim.
Look at the cats, the conditions, the show record, the health record, the answers, the losses, the placement rules, the families who came back, and whether the breeder says “I don’t know” when that is the truthful answer.
The public record is not proof of perfection. It is proof that perfection is not the claim.
