What you have wandered into
UltraVires is a small California Oriental Shorthair breeding and exhibition program. The site is the durable record: the breed, the history, placement, health, individual cats, and the longer arguments that require room of their own.
We are not a rescue. We endorse early spay and neuter, use kitten pens, and intentionally pair cats for the purpose of making other cats to take to shows. We also discuss the substantial negatives of the cat fancy.
Kitten placement begins with private contact through this site. It does not begin with money or a claim on whichever kitten happens to be visible. If you’d like a referral to a legitimate breeder, simply ask; we’ll do our best to help you make a connection to someone we know personally or from competition.
Curiosity is welcome. Spam, catfishing, and cruelty are not.

If you are deciding whether the breed belongs in your household, start with the breed page. If you are hoping for a kitten, read placement before contacting me. If you are trying not to send money to a photograph stolen by a scammer, there is a page for that too.
The essays hold the arguments. Cats & Stories holds the lives that made those arguments necessary. The history distinguishes my mother’s Temeluphil program from UltraVires, which I began on my own in 2016.

We want to encourage good stewardship of feline companions, promote ethical standards of cat breeding—including not doing it if that’s appropriate—and educate anyone interested enough to ask.
We don’t judge who you vote for, sleep next to, cosplay as, identify as, worship, don’t worship, rich, poor, race… you get it. Just like cats and be curious. We appreciate you all.
